EMBO practical course - Structure, dynamics and function of biological macromolecules by NMR
from August 30, 2024
to September 6, 2024

NMR spectroscopy is an essential technique for studying the structure, dynamics and interactions of macromolecules at atomic resolution. It is unique in extracting dynamic information over a wide range of time scales and, therefore, in revealing the molecular mechanisms that control biological function. Recent developments in the field of NMR include the study of intrinsically disordered proteins and their interaction mechanisms, atomic-resolution understanding of RNA dynamics, real-time monitoring of megadaltonian nano-machines in action and studies of the conformational behavior of proteins in living cells (intracellular NMR).
The course will contribute to the advancement of this important field by providing a solid knowledge base for next generation NMR spectroscopists. It will include NMR theory and the building blocks of pulse sequence, structure determination strategies, relaxation techniques to study dynamics on multiple time scales as well as the latest developments in NMR in cells. . The course emphasizes practical skills, i.e. hands-on experience in setting up, processing and analyzing NMR experiments and obtaining structural and dynamic information quantitative.

Prerequisites: The course is aimed at 25 doctoral students and postdoctoral researchers who use (or will use) NMR spectroscopy as the main experimental technique in their research program.
